(UPADTE) Google no longer sharing Android with Huawei

Update, May 19, 2019. Google has now released a statement about Huawei. Huawei will still continue to use Google services including the Play Store and security from the Play Store. Since Huawei was put on the Entity List, Google will still comply with the U.S. Government. Google posted a tweet on their Android Twitter Account stating these details. Though, it is still unclear what the future of decision for Huawei is with Android.

With the U.S. now cracking down with Chinese technology companies, Google is now pulling Android from new Huawei devices immediately. Huawei can only now use the Android Open Source Code (AOSC) if they want to. Even though Huawei sells their devices in other countries besides China, Google will not allow their software, including Android, Google Play Store, Gmail, etc., to be used. The devices Huawei has already released that have the Play Store and Android won't be affected right now. Huawei can still, however push security updates to these devices when released to AOSC, but not newer Android updates.

This news all means that the recent rumor of Huawei coming back to the U.S. in July to sell their brand new Mate 20 5G device is false. Brand new watches from Huawei will not have Wear OS either. Updates regarding Android Q have not surfaced yet. Google is still discussing specific details. Huawei did say that they have a software that they are working on just in case this all happened. They even called it a "worst-case scenario." It looks like Huawei needs to start working hard on the project for new devices. Here is an exact quote that a source said.

Alphabet Inc’s Google has suspended business with Huawei that requires the transfer of hardware and software products except those covered by open source licenses… Huawei Technologies Co Ltd will immediately lose access to updates to the Android operating system, and the next version of its smartphones outside of China will also lose access to popular applications and services including the Google Play Store and Gmail app. Huawei will continue to have access to the version of the Android operating system available through the open source license that is freely open to anyone who wishes to use it. But Google will stop providing any technical support and collaboration for Android and Google services to Huawei going forward, the source said.

Time can only tell what comes next. We'll keep you updated for what happens next.
